What is quartz?

Quartz is an abundant vitreous mineral used extensively in jewelery. It includes a vast variety of different colors, most notably amethyst and citrine (purple and yellow-orange, respectively).

Are quartz and rock crystal the same thing?

Yes. Rock crystal (cristal de roche) is a variety of the name and refers to the colorless variety of quartz.
